Presentation to Contact Point: Thursday 20th February 2020

At the 2019 AGM, the membership of the Society approved a proposal by the committee to make a donation to a deserving local charity. Contact Point was the preferred choice on account of its work among the special needs adults of the community.

The presentation was made at the beginning of Members' Night on Thursday 20th February 2020 to Mrs Christine Davis who represented the charity. In receiving the donation, Mrs Davis thanked the Society and described the work of Contact Point and how the donation would help in the running of the Coffee Clubs.

Report on Members' Night: A Favourite or Interesting or Significant Book: Thursday 20th February 2020

The Society's annual Members' Night was held on Thursday 20th February with 'A Favourite or Interesting or Significant Book' as its theme. Eight members participated with each speaking for eight to ten minutes on their choice of book and they made the evening an enjoyable event, as is always the case with Members' Night.

The eight books fell into the following broad categories - two on the Scottish landscape and outdoor activities, one on the history of a nearby locality, three novels, one a collection of pieces of journalism and one a Bible commentary.

'Mountain, Moor and Loch' is a profusely illustrated 1895 guide to the route of the recently opened  West Highland Railway while 'Hamish's Mountain Walk' is the inspiring account of Hamish Brown's successful attempt in the summer of 1974 to climb all of the Munros in a single continuous expedition. 'The Parish of Campsie' is an account of all aspects of the Campsie area by local historian John Cameron and published in Kirkintilloch in 1892.

The three novels were chosen for different reasons - 'The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul' by Deborah Rodriguez because of its description of the challenges faced by women in Afghanistan; 'The Notting Hill Mystery' by Charles Warren Adams because it might be the first detective novel and that its true authorship is a mystery; 'The Affair at Invergarroch' by Michael Elder because not only is it a good read as a children's book, but also that the author himself was only seventeen years of age when he wrote it.

Dannie Abse's 'Journals from the Ant-Heap' is a collection of amusing anecdotes from when he wrote for national newspapers as well as being a physician and acclaimed poet. The most physically impressive choice at Members' Night was a three volume nineteenth century Biblical Commentary, i.e. a cross-referenced Bible. What made this particularly interesting was that the set had been presented in 1877 to Mr and Mrs Thomas Coats of the Paisley mill owning family by the minister of Sannox church on Arran; this previously redundant church is currently being developed as a Christian centre by a group including the member whose choice this was.

Report on Members’ Night: Members' Collections: 15th February 2018

The Society’s annual Members’ Night was held on Thursday 15th February with “Members Collections” as this year’s topic. A total of twelve members contributed by bringing along items representing their collections and they made the meeting one of the most successful in recent years, despite the rather cramped space available. The evening began by the participants each being given a couple of minutes to describe their collections and how they started them. There was then three quarters of an hour for the Society's members to tour the exhibition and examine the material and engage with the exhibitors. Members' Night 2018 was rounded off in a very appropriate fashion by the Society’s guest of honour - Mr Peter McCormack, East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture's Museums Development Officer – who played the role of exhibition critic or cultural commentator. He discussed the underlying themes of the collections and linked them to his own views on collecting in an entertaining way.

Members' Night: Thursday 15th February 2018

The annual Members' Night will be held on Thursday 15th February 2018. The theme this year is "Members' Collections" and the evening will be an opportunity for members to share, examine and talk about what has been brought along. Mr Peter McCormack, Museums Development Officer for East Dumbartonshire Learning and Culture, will be the Society's special guest for the event and will provide some personal reflections on "collecting" and "collections".

Members' Night is one of the highlights of the winter programme and it is anticipated that this year will maintain this fine tradition.

Report on Members’ Night: A Significant Photograph: Thursday 16th February 2017

The annual Members’ Night is always a highlight of the Society’s programme and once again its members enjoyed an entertaining evening. Based on the theme of “A Significant Photograph”, there were nine varied contributions illustrated by many additional images to provide necessary background.

In summary these were: Don Martin - an usual occurrence of a local train on the Kirkintilloch branch hauled by a goods locomotive instead of the more normal tank engine; Caroline Brooks - her experiences of an archaeological dig in Chester; Ronnie Forsyth - the roles he has had in life, mainly as an office bearer in various trade bodies; Valerie McClure - the chaotic approach to enforcing building controls in Italy, and specifically the dangerous practice of building on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, Europe’s most active volcano; Rita Bennie - her memories of hay making in the late 1940s on the family farm now occupied by houses in Westermains; Les Jenkins - reflections on his career as a secondary school history teacher; David Graham - the High Possil meteorite of 1804, the first recorded in Scotland; Donald Macleod - his experiences as a symphony orchestra violinist and the complexity of orchestral scores; Ivan Ruddock - the enjoyment he has had since the 1990s from “Father Ted”, the television comedy series.

The evening was brought to a close by Donald Macleod playing traditional fiddle tunes while members had their tea.

Members' Night: A Significant Photograph: Thursday 16th February 2017

The Society's annual Members’ Night will be held on Thursday 16th February 2017, and this year the theme will be "A Significant Photograph". Eight members will probably contribute this year and it is anticipated that the theme will be interpreted differently by all concerned - i.e. the photograph might represent a place, an event, a person and so on. This meeting has always been a highlight of the Society's programme and is expected to be again this year.

Members' Night: A Place to Remember: Thursday 18th February 2016

The Society's annual Members’ Night will be held on Thursday 18th February 2016, and this year the theme will be "A Place to Remember". These presentations should be broadly historical, but ‘history’ can be widely interpreted in this respect, and no limits in time or space will be set. If anyone wishes to be added to the list of speakers, please contact Ivan Ruddock as soon as possible via the Society's email address.

The Society's annual  Members’ Night will be held on Friday 27th February 2015. This year the theme will be ‘My Favourite Object’ (reprise of a popular topic of many years ago). Members will be invited to display and describe a favourite object in their personal possession. These presentations should be broadly historical, but ‘history’ can be widely interpreted in this respect, and no limits in time or space will be set. Members will be invited to offer their personal contributions to the event at our meetings of 16th January and 13th February. About a dozen such presentations are sought with about five minutes allocated for each.

To celebrate the 2014 Commonwealth Games, this year's Members' Night topic is 'My favourite sporting memory'.
